The history of Karimnagar district can be traced from the times of the Nandas, who extended their rule over the Deccan. The existence of a city called "Nav Nanda Dehra" modern Nander on the bank of the Godavari also suggests that the Nanda empire covered a large portion of the Deccan of which this district formed a part.
    Earlier, Karimnagar called as Yelagandala representing native Telangana people. Later on Nizams changed the name as Karimnagar which derives its name from Syed Karimullah Shah Saheb Quiladar, and was a centre for Vedic learning etc.

History : 
    In the sphere of religion people of Karimnagar region followed Buddhism, Jainism and Hinduism during the early period. Gradually the spread of Islam started from 14th century and Christianity from 20th Century A.D. in this region. A study of various religions and their impact on art and architecture need to be studied in order to understand the religious life of the people of this region.


      Early medieval era of the Indian history brings forth a dramatic change in the social outlook, religious concepts and mythology, giving a new life to Indian art and architecture. The Mahabharata, Ramayana and the various Puranas received greater attention and admiration of the people at large. The Bhakti cult which emphasized the concept of personal devotion of individual gods and goddesses received greater impetus than in the past, wherein the lay Hindu worshipper had liberty to choose his own deity, Ishtadeva, for selfless devotion and worship. The religious concepts of the people developed the idea of building up lofty and majestic temples for enshrining the idols of Hindu divinity.
